5 non-negotiables for your hand luggage

Regardless of whether I am going someplace hot or someplace cold - these are the 5 non-negotiables in my hand luggage (aside from the obvious like my wallet or passport) for travelling.

  1. A hand-fan! If you are anything like me rushing from one terminal to another or walking the miles to your gate brings you out in a sweat a hand fan is your friend. I picked one up for a few euros when I was in Italy, and I think it hasn’t left my suitcase since. It takes up very little room and I use it at least once on every journey!

  2. In sharp contrast to item 1 - my second item is a wrap! Temperatures onboard the plane can vary wildly and it often gets very cold so it is nice to have something to throw around your shoulders to stay comfortable especially on long haul flights.

Tip - if you are heading on a sun holiday pop your beach cover up in your hand luggage as your wrap. Chic and saves you packing something heavy you definitely won’t use all holiday.

  3. If I am travelling with lighter shoes on - I usually pack some nice socks to pop on in case my feet get cold. I really do not recommend travelling in sandals - airplane toilets can leave a lot to be desired so I recommend wearing footwear with coverage.

  4. Hydration. Air travel can really be really dehydrating for your skin so I always have hand cream, a hydrating face mist and a nice lip balm with me.

Tip - bonus points if you pack these in a freezer bag before you get to the airport so you don’t have to fuss about with your liquids in the security queue.

  5. My fifth non-negotiable is a water bottle. I like something that I can refill. Most airports have water stations now where you can fill up after security. I did have a very cool one similar shape to a book however it exploded in my bag when I put sparking water in it!
Tip - don’t put sparking water in!

These bottle typically take more water than what you can buy in a WHSmith and you can feel extra smug knowing that you are taking the more sustainable option, and there are some super chic options available!
